Just bought a car? A short checklist
- Before you pay. Have an independent mechanic inspect the car and scan it with a computer. Match the VIN and engine number to the papers. Find help
- Papers in your name. Proof of ownership (bill of sale), change of ownership, vehicle licence, roadworthiness and third-party insurance. Tinted windows need a police permit. Find help
- Tyres. Read the 4-digit date on each tyre (e.g. 1021 = week 10 of 2021). Replace tyres older than about 6 years, even with tread left. Find help
- First service. Engine oil and filters, brake fluid, coolant and a battery test. Ask for proof of the last timing belt change, or plan one. Find help
- Tracker. A tracker from the last owner may still report to them: have it re-registered in your name, or install your own. Find help
